Myelographic Studies
Myleographic Studies Provide Diagnostic Visibility of Spinal Cord and its Relationship Within the Spinal Cord.
What Happens During a Myelogram?
Under anesthesia, an x-ray blocking fluid is infused into the patient's spinal canal and into the membrane fluid surrounding the spinal cord. Digital radiographs are taken to image the contours of the spinal cord made visible by the contrast agent. Conditions such as disc ruptures, tumors, and vertebral abnormalities are indirectly seen as blocking or devaiting the normal flow of contrast. A post myelgram CT further localizes and visualizes a structural problem by its ability to produce thin detailed images in three different planes.
How Can a Myelogram Help My Pet?
The myelogram aids in identifying the specific location and cause for an animal lsoing strength, proprioception ( knowing where it's feet and legs are), or why it's in pain. The study often leads to a surgical procedure to eradicate the
spinal cord or nerve compression, relieving pain and /or the
opportunity to regain function.
