Dr. Doug Kern 

A highly skilled board certified surgical specialist with nearly 25 years of small animal referral surgery experience.  Adjunctive training with other surgical specialists at a number of veterinary teaching institutions, and advanced training in microsurgery have allowed Dr. Kern to draw from a broad-based and varied pool of specialized techniques.  Dr. Kern’s services range from reconstructive surgery to orthopedics, and chest and abdominal surgery to cancer treatment. He also utilizes advances in radiosurgery to reduce tissue damage that would normally be caused by the use of laser.  Dr. Kern routinely consults and advises primary care veterinarians with regard to interpretations of diagnostic testing, radiographic evaluations, operating techniques and postoperative care. With the combined triad of the family pet owner, the referring family veterinarian and Dr. Kern’s surgical specialty, the continuity of care and the provision of comprehensive health care for family pets are maximized.  Just like people, pets can benefit from specialty examinations and surgery to provide life-saving procedures, correct abnormalities and reduce or eliminate pain and improve mobility thereby improving the quality of the life of the pet.  Dr. Kern is committed to timely and accurate diagnostics and surgery. Many surgeries can be performed following the initial consultation and the patient can be discharged to home care later that same day. Continued or recommended hospitalization is not a problem since MVRC is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.At MVRC, Dr. Kern integrates pre and postoperative rehabilitation services with MVRC’s Rehabilitation Center and Gayle Hickok.  Dr. Kern enjoys gardening, landscaping, recycling discarded wood into functional structures, metal fabrication and attempting to fix (antique) Farmall tractors. His wife and two children help control the flock of chickens, two cats, a dog and numerous wildlife at home.
